I'm not a certified master technician. I didn't go to trade school. Three and a half years ago, I couldn't do any of this — then I met my spouse, James, and he started teaching me. I learned everything I know about cars the same way most of us learn the important stuff — in a garage, with greasy hands, usually because something was broken and paying someone else to fix it wasn't in the budget.
What we've actually done
James and I have worked on our own cars for years — and I mean really worked on them. Engine: head gaskets (replaced and machined), throttle body, EGR hoses, coolant reservoir. Brakes: pads, rotors, calipers, brake hoses. Electrical: full rewiring jobs, new battery cables, ground wires, starters, ignition switches, crank sensors, ignition control modules — I've pulled apart and cleaned every wire in both underhood fuse boxes. Fuel system: fuel pump assembly, pressure regulator, gas tank straps (plus a putty-weld patch on a leaking tank). And the rest: control arms, ball joints, wheel hubs, O2 sensors, wiper motors, exhaust patches. Honestly, if it can be changed on a car, we've probably changed it.
